Reminiscing

Some of you are going to think I'm crazy, some of you won't be able to relate to what I'm about to share at all, and some of you are going to understand EXACTLY what happened when I saw a bag of scraps for sale for $1.50

I bought this bag  at our local quilt shop.  Someone had brought in their scraps from their sewing room and couldn't bear to throw them away but didn't want to use them herself.  I couldn't really tell what was in there, but WOW, blast from the past when I opened that bag.  What era does this remind you of?

And did it bring back memories for you like it did me?  Yes, these are dated colors and not what is popular right now but it sure was fun reminiscing about all the things this reminded me of.  Some of you weren't even born yet or just barely, so you will be the ones that can't relate.  Some of you hate sewing with scraps so you won't relate either, but SOME of you will totally get it!

I started cutting everything into 2 inches strips and this is what emerged
Block 1

Block 2

Block 3

Block 4

Block 5
Which one is your favorite?

These blocks ended up being about 11 inches.  If I make four more, I can make a 3 x 3 decent size baby quilt.  Can I squeeze four more blocks out of this pile?

Why yes!  I think I can!  Even if I don't have enough pieces to make the long sides of the blocks, I will just piece things together to make them long enough.  So that was my evening.

Did seeing these fabrics remind you of anything in particular? I'd love to hear!  What were you doing in the 80's?

This is my squirrel while I am waiting for the backing I ordered for Ashley's quilt to get here.

  1. Great blocks, what a bargain. I’m sure you can get four more blocks, go for it. Actually I have one of those fabrics, the blue toneon tone with the tiny flowers, at least I definitely had it, I’m not certain I have any left although I did have. It came in purple too, I bought it from Joannes when I was in Florida on holiday as a brand new quilter in 2000. We took our youngest two there on the last family holiday together when they were 16 and 17, and we did without a honeymoon as we had just been married . I only once bought a bag of scraps from one of my local shops and was very disappointed, it wasn’t all cotton, lots of one and little of the others.

  3. Well I was almost right . . . as I scrolled through your blocks, seeing the different fabrics, I kept waffling back and forth between the 70s and 80s. So I guess I was close! You did a great job with the blocks.

  4. Oh, did you ever bring back memories! I started quilting in the mid-90's. I have the red, white, and blue fabrics with the little flowers... Your blocks came out way cuter than I suspected they would. I will always buy the random bag of fabric from Goodwill or wherever. Nice score!

    1. Hi Anne, You are a no-reply commenter so I'll reply here. So nice to "meet" another quilter after my own heart. :)

  5. I am a child of the 80's and I do remember prints like these. It makes me want to hug my grandmother, or at least go home and hug a few pillows she made in fabrics just like these. I think this was a fabulous find! If I go home and look, I just might have some similar scraps that I've inherited.

  6. I started Quilting in 1980, so those fabrics bring back memories, but mostly about sewing clothing for my daughter. My Quilts then were mostly solids, art pieces. Enjoy using those pieces. Love the blocks you've made. Keep up the good work!

  7. I’m cutting a pile of fabrics that I inherited from my SILs mom into strips and some of them are the same. I’m really enjoying the vintage calicos. Others I recognize from the bags of scraps my Quilty friends have given me over the years that I still delve into.

  8. No favorite because they all work so well together! This will be such a sweet quilt. I was knee deep in these colors in the 80’s making all sorts of quilty things—and some clothing, too.

  12. Log cabins are such a lovely way to use a scrap bag. You scored a great mix of floral, stripe, plaid, and solid that will make a wonderful baby quilt. Congratulations. Thanks for linking your utility quilt with AHIQ.

  13. Ah, too much fun! Just think what someone may think about your fabrics from 2010's when it comes time for you to sell stash bags, lol!

  15. I wore a Gunnie Sacks outfit to my high school prom, and I'm pretty certain one of those fabric was used for the skirt!! The top was an ecru lace high necked, puffy sleeved blouse with pearl-like buttons. Very Little House on the Prairie, except for my Farrah Fawcett hairdo!! LOL!

  18. The last block with the alphabet on the fabric is one my kids used as a floor quilt. That was late 80's through 2001. Just babies here. Such fond memories brought on by a fabric scrap! Thank you.

  19. Oh, yes, I get it! I definitely remember these prints! Actually, they're very similar to Susan's BH Garden Party quilt that I just finished. This will make a beautiful baby quilt!

  20. Such soft pretty colors! I try not to remember the clothing from the 80's and since I wasn't quilting then, I don't really remember the fabrics. But your blocks turned out beautifully. I was in college during the 80's, first undergrad, then graduate school. It's kinda like the lost decade concerning anything to do with regular life.

  21. A trip through memory lane! I recognized one in particular and think I have used some in another colorway. What a hoot! My aunt quilted only from scraps and when she died I inherited her scraps. I'm sure if I looked at her postage stamp Trip Around the World quilt I'd find more matches. I'm just about out of her fabrics, boo hoo, but I have some lovely quilts from them.

  22. In the 80s I was riding my bike past my crush's house, but these colours remind me of my mom's clothes. Good for you, using the scraps instead of tossing them.
